Great Expectations evokes the sense that the main characters may in fact exist, and that a course of events may really happen. It is a great mosaic constituted by various discourses rather than a simple representation of reality. We can notice contradictory generic allegiances and repetitive patterns in the margins of the text, which blocks linear progressive narration and subverts realistic narrative, though diverse arbitrary conventions are adopted to produce realistic effect on the text. Repetition and allusiveness undermine the linear sense of reality fostered by Pip’s development. The complex textual grain blocks the possibility of representing life and the social world as it seems to the reader. Great Expectations lies in the tradition of realism so long as it employs diverse literary convention and codes to produce the effect of representing the common experience to its readers.
