Scobie, the protagonist of The Heart of the Matter, holds a confirmative view of life. Mentioning it in detail further, he believes that there are many human miseries in this world. He thinks that it is impossible to seek his own happiness because this world is full of many human miseries and sufferings. So he cannot but have pity on other people and their sufferings. He regards it as “the heart of the matter.” But he does not surrender himself to the despair of this world and would seek the hope of this world. It is the commitment to sacrificial love for the miserable people that Scobie regards as “the hint of explanation.” Graham Greene shows us in this miserable and chaotic world what direction is the right and valuable way that we should live. It is true that the sacrificial love can recover many miseries and absurdities in this world.
