Oh Gyu-Won is a poet who pens both poems and children’s poems. His children’s poems were produced intensively in the early creative period, and then these form the foundation of his passionate poems produced later. Therefore, it is indispensable to analyze his children’s poems at a pre-stage for understanding fully his poetic world. He tried to show the world order through descriptive images in children’s poems. In this regard, his children’s poems are a steppingstone for advancing toward his poems. He could build a unique poetic world by deepening and expanding what he learned in the creation of children’s poems.
First, he developed a children’s literature theory based on love. He put “realization” of love toward the world first rather than “teaching” as the educational element shown in children’s literature. This came from the tragic experience of witnessing his mother’s death during his childhood and the Korean War. The deficiency of maternity accumulated in his period of growing up and the absence of a father are the driving forces for him to stress love toward the world unexceptionally in his children’s poems. After defining children’s poems as “poems viewed with a child’s mind”, he devoted himself to the creation of “poems that can see” the innate aspect of things based on his children’s poetry theory.
Second, he distinguished poems from children’s poems through the imagination of “road”. In his poems, “road” was standard that distinguishes ego from the world whereas in his children’s poems it was a space where dynamic living phenomena exist. Unlike in his poems that recognize the world via a vehicle of the “road”, in his children’s poems he focused on the existential level of “road”. This is because of his unique poetic view that keeps to a description-oriented poem creation method. The imagination of “road” that he valued highly is deemed important in the children’s poems so as to enable us to classify his poems into poems and children’s poems according to the appearance of “road”.
Finally, Oh Gyu-Won transformed the “raw thing” as “raw image” by borrowing ordinary examples for poetic theory. His image theory was created by the reaction against the severe post-war infertility, and it germinated from the Car in the Tree in his children’s poetry book. While becoming disenchanted by the tragic situation after the war created from the collision of empty ideologies, he tried to replace the tragedy of a real world full of death with the image of living phenomena. The early pattern of “raw image” announced around this time could be confirmed in detail in his children’s poems.
