Julia Cho, a 2nd generation Korean American playwright, suggests in her play, BFE, several fresh viewpoints on contemporary Asian American’s lives. First of all, we can find new types of Asian American women characters in her play. Korean American Women in BFE, are not presented as lotus blossoms or dragon ladies which have been usually represented in American popular culture. As well, the images of heroic or brave figures, which we have witnessed on stages created by the former generations of Asian American playwrights, are not shown. Secondly, she delves into their lives and identifies them as marginal beings not only in America but also in Korea in which their family origin may be found. Although Panny’s family lead to isolated hermits’ lives, Julia Cho seems to succeed in diverging positions and histories of Asian American women from the former Asian American Theatre.
