    Icon is a small graphic which represents a particular function in computer applications. Comprehension and learning of icons are needed for using them because they represent complex information in a compact form. This study was conducted to examine which were more important factors in using icons. Representational characteristics of icons were examined. Second, using a eyetracker, the redundant display was examined which removed obscurity of display and gave more meaningful information. Icons using attribute of object and direct description of action were more efficient than representational form in comprehension. Redundant display was proved to have some advantages when the icons had low familiarity. Visual information processing of icons were discussed in terms of familiarity and learning.
