Objectives:The purpose of this study was to assess the differences of clinical characteristics between a premenopausal onset group and a postmenopausal onset group in female late onset schizophrenic patients.
Methods:Thirty three female schizophrenic outpatients of onset age of forty or over were included in this study. They were interviewed about their gynecological and reproductive history, which included informations regarding their menopausal history. Five out of thirty three women were excluded due to their symptoms having changed recently, due to their taking medicine which affected their hormones, or due to their having some kind of illness. Twenty eight patients were divided into the premenopausal onset group(n=13) and the postmenopausal onset group(n=15), and their clinical characteristics were evaluated using a Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), a Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms(SANS), a Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms(SAPS), Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory(BAI), and the Korean version of Mini-Mental Status Examination(MMSE-K).
Results:The postmenopausal onset group showed significantly higher scores than the premenopausal onset group in PANSS-N(t=-4.660, p=0.000) and SANS(t=-3.346, p=0.004). These results were independent of group differences in the onset age and the present age.
Conclusion:The results showed that there could be differences of clinical characteristics between female late onset schizophrenic patients according to the effect of menopause at onset of schizophrenia, which might suggest the influence of estrogen.
