초록·키워드
The purpose of this study was to discuss the importance of the ethical behaviors, rating standards, and test-takers' rights in the context of English language testing. Test results should be understandable to test-takers. However, sometimes test-takers do not agree with the results. Since they have not been informed about or agreed with the test content, the testing process, test scoring criteria, testing policy, etc., they could have made unexpected results. The inadequate test results could be minimized by providing enough information about the nature of the test to test-takers in advance. Test-takers should have the right to access the information about the testing process as well. In addition, the analyses of several English language oral proficiency tests used in Korea such as TOP (Test of Oral Proficiency), SEPT (Simulated English Proficiency Test), G-TELP (General Test of English Language Proficiency) Speaking Test, indicate that unethical behaviors in language testing are related to the inadequate use of native speakers' standards in a Korean context. Based on this research, it is suggested that the ethics of English language testing should be reconsidered in a Korean context and test developers and English educators should put much effort on providing documentation for the rights and responsibilities of test-takers as well as standards.
