Shiji written by Simaqian司馬遷 is a historical book dealing with the history of the entire China from the ancient time to the Han dynasty and Eastern Asia at that time. The characteristics of Shiji is a book written in a style of jizhuanti紀傳體 which is composed of ‘本紀, 表, 書, 世家, 列傳’ and it described the Asian peoples around China. Especially it has great historical value as a vivid field description about Old Chosun.
This paper distinguishes the period of Old Chosun dynasty from that of Wiman Chosun衛滿朝鮮, interprets the materials of Old Chosun in Shiji in a new way and analyzes the structure of their contents and reexamines all the materials concerned.
Shiji has only a few materials about Old Chosun dynasty but its historical meaning is very significant. Shiji described the historical facts about Old Chosun dynasty surrounding Liadong, its relation with Yen燕, Chin秦, Han漢 etc and the changes of central area and the frontier line in Old Chosun in a vivid and clear way.
