Lies caused unusually intensive disputes in Korea since it dealt with the badly deviant sexuality as a commercial mainstream film. When it could be finally released after the compromise with the Korea Media Rating Board, which had refused twice to rate it, some of the conservative NGOs accused its producer, director and exhibitors, arguing it was an extremely obscene film so it had not be shown to the mass. However it was released on Jan. 8, 2000 and the accusations by the NGOs were rejected in a row by the prosecutory authorities.
The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the dynamic process due to the sexuality of Lies and text itself on the basis of the concepts of Althusser' s 'Ideological State Apparatuses(ISA)' and Gramsci' s Hegemony. For the sexuality of Lies has obviously become a site of the hegemonic struggle between dominant ideology and resistance in both of its context and text. In addition to it, this thesis finds some virtues from the deviant sexuality, generally missed by the wrong focused social disputes and presents them theoretically by adopting Giddens's concept, 'intimacy'.
Therefore this thesis focuses not on the film' s aesthetic quality but on politically progressive values. This perspective naturally leads to a conclusion that the text itself is still and ever more important for the film studies even as one area of the cultural studies although the academic interest has been moved to the audience since the rise of post-structuralism. If one overlooks how a text is constructed and what meanings the text produces, no commercial film dealing with so-called immoral motives will be possibly rescued from the contemptuous generalization, 'trash' and art film oriented blindness, not depending on the dogma that the audience is everything.
