The purpose of this study is to analyse the contrary functions of modality in Korean auxiliary verbs {내다} and {버리다}, and to intensively study and discuss the speaker’s psychological attitude, by especially focusing on the relationship between these verbs and the main verbs. While {내다} can connect volitive verbs only, {버리다} does not have the same restriction as this. Therefore, the distribution of {버리다} is much broader than that of {내다}.

④ non-volitive verb + {버리다}
① When {내다} is connected to volitive verbs, speakers express the ‘expectation-intended’ psychological attitude in that the agents have completed difficult works with their own intention.
② {내다} can not be connected to non-volitive verbs.
③ When {버리다} is connected to volitive verbs, speakers express the ‘inversely expectation-intended’ psychological attitude by meaning that the agents' intentional actions have ended.
④ When {버리다} is connected to non-volitive verbs, it shows that speakers have the ‘inversely expectation-intended’ psychological attitude by meaning that the agents' actions had to be finished by some other conditions regardless of the agents' own intention.
In the aspectual meaning of ‘finishing’, {버리다} has a stronger functionality than {내다}. This is also perceived in their original meanings. Historically, both verbs, {버리다} and {내다} have become auxiliary verbs through grammaticalization and meaning abstraction.
Moreover, the contrary functions of modality in {내다} and {버리다} also differ in the co-occurrence shapes of modifying adverbials in sentences. {내 다}, for example, is in accordance with ‘기어이’, ‘반드시’, ‘꼭’, or ‘끝내’, ‘드디어’, ‘겨우’, etc. But {버리다} is in the co-occurrence shapes with adverbials such as ‘그만’, ‘어쩔 수 없이’, ‘저절로’, and so on.
