To examine the effect of work surface height on wrist posture in laboratory pipette work, an experiment study was conducted with 10 university students, staff and faculty members as subjects. The independent variable was work surface height (WSH) relative to elbow height; 6 heights were compared in this study. The dependent variables were wrist posture (angle for 2 planes), by electrogoniometry, and UE discomfort (rating for 4 body parts) obtained with a 100mm-visual analog rating scale. The radial/ulnar deviation posture was very significantly different across 6 WSHs in the analysis of variance and also there was significant difference between sets of WSHs in the multiple pair-wise comparisons test. Discomfort for the wrist was not significantly different both across 6 WSHs and between sets of WSHs. Correlation between wrist angles and corresponding discomfort scales was significant. This study suggests that wrist posture is influenced by WSH in pipette work, and that such information can be utilized in designing ergonomic improvements of general laboratory equipment and layout.
