This paper aims at discovering the Unification Church’s logic in its struggles for recognition as a Christian group and its discourses on the unification of religions. The Unification Church appeared as a new religious sect of Korea in 1954. From the beginning, this sect faced much criticism from all branches of traditional Christian churches-Protestant and Roman Catholic. Christian churches blamed the Unification Church as a wicked non-Christian sect pretending to be a Christian church.
Defending their position, Unificationists emphasized that they belong to Christianity. Futhermore, they argued that the Unification church is a new, authentic Christian church trying to reform the corrupt Protestant churches. According to them, it was the Unification Church’s duty to unify all Christian denominations into one church. That meant that the Unification Church desired to become the leader of all Christian churches.
On the other hand, the Unification Church regarded four religions, namely, Confucianism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity, as great religions. Christianity, in particular, was considered to be the greatest world religion. Neverthelesss, they placed the Unification Church at the highest and final position, through which all religions will be ultimately unified. That meant the Unification Church had a strong desire to become the leader of all religions.
Recently, the Unification Church changed the official name of organization, from “Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity” into “Family Federation for World Peace and Unification.” This suggests that the Unification Church abandoned its identity as a Christian or a religious organization. But, it is expected that the Unification Church will continue to struggle for recognition and hegemony through focusing on family and mass wedding ceremony.
