This study examined the degree of "tabloidization" of prime-time television news in the three national television networks in Korea. The study evaluated the content and form of television news, conducting quantitative analysis for a week(Dec.3 - Dec.9, 2000) in terms of news subjects, information sources, report type and presentation mode in which soft news were reflected. According to the results, the soft news, which dealt mostly with human interests and sensationalistic topics, such as crime, accidents, fashion and human interest, accounted for half of the sampled news stories. Although there were some differences among broadcasting stations with regards to the ratio between hard news and soft news, notable statistical significance in the degree of "tabloidization" among the broadcasters was not evident.
The most significant result in this study was that as coverage of soft news became more varied and the numbers increased, these soft news further became topics of in-depth and investigative reporting. Traditional hard news such as politics tended to become "tabloidized" as well in that personal conflicts among politicians and discord among parties were highlighted instead of dealing with policy decisions and the attendant critical background information. Another notable finding was the lack of various reliable sources of information among the broadcasting stations. All three stations(MBC, KBS and SBS) depended on less than two, many times, one source per average news item. Especially in MBC' s case, news report that depended on a single source was relatively higher than other broadcasting companies. In addition, all of them quoted more non-official sources and ordinary people as their primary resource than state organizations or official sources for their news stories. Expectedly, many soft news stories, deriving from the non-official and private sources, were broadcast, with broad implication as to the newsworthiness of stories and the credibility of the sources. Subsequently, the "cabloidization" of news and the increased use of non-official and private sources might also promote commercialization of TV news overall.
This study has some limitations such as the method of sampling and the sample size. It also lacks a clear definition of "tabloidization of news" in analyzing news contents. Therefore, it is posited that further studies clarify the relationship between tabloidization and commercialization of television news and analyze soft news more systematically on the basis of longer-term period. To augment the current study, a qualitative analysis on increasing commercialization of prime-time television news is strongly suggested. Lastly, it is recommended that further discussion about "tabloidization of news" should be developed in that the increase of soft news could ultimately bring about more commercialism in television journalism.
