The objective of this research was to determine proper concentration and treatment duration of a glycerine solution for making preserved flowers of rose 'Vital'. Quality of preserved flowers was evaluated by measuring percentage changes in flower size and weight. Glycerine concentration significantly affected percentage changes in flower size and weight. However, treatment duration with a glycerine solution had little effect as conwared with concentration on percentage changes in flower size and weight. Flower size of preserved flowers treated with 25 and 50% (v/v) glycerine solution decreased to 80.9 and 81.1% of the initial size, respectively, and showed the least changes in size among all treatments. Weight of 25 and 50% glycerine solution-treated flowers was 66.7 and 93.8% of the weight of the initial weight, respectively. Among treatment durations tested, treatment for 48 hours was the most effective in maintaining the flower size. Flowers treated with 25 and 50% glycerine solutions were more appropriate to be used in floral decorations than those of air dried, silica gel dried, fi'eeze dried, and hot air dried. Sizes of dried flowers decreased to 65% of the initial sizes. Flower weight decreased to 30% of the initial weight in air dried and 17% in hot air and freeze dried flowers. In conclusion, flowers treated with 25 or 50% (v/v) glycerine solution for 48 hours were the most similar to fresh flowers and were appropriate for floral decoration use.
