Cultural heritages which was criticized during the Enlightenment Period was rediscoverd as 'the essence of the nation' by the 民族-discourse and 〈Chosun Gwangmunhoi〉. Especially, Choi Namsun, a main member of 〈Gwangmunhoi〉 upgraded the old novels and poems into the classics. The invention of the literary 'tradition' was the double course in which the modern concept of 'literature' was projected into the past and the tradition, in turn, enlarged the very concept of 'literature'
Choi Namsun selected, adjusted, published and reinterpretated the significance of old novels by a series of modern concept of literature: literary form such as composition, the representation of emotion and the world, fiction as a way to the truth. Moreover, Choi redescovered 'Si-jo(時調)' as a model of the national literature. 『歌曲選』, the first modern anthology of Si-jo, unlike the premodern anthologies advocated the idea of the national literature. Choi tried to theorize Si-jo as the national literature in the 1920's. However, he couldn't find out the national identity of Si-jo. He remained to emphasize the emotional content, a general factor of the modern poetry but couldn't reveal the proper rhythm of Si-jo. In 『時調 頻聚』, Choi tried the new composition of the anthology, using the classification by the subject items, not by melody but highlighted delicate and abundunt emotion of old Si-jos. In contrast, he abided to the metrics of 平時調 and the idea of the nation and failed to express the abundunt inner world.
The main contribution of Choi to the literature was to establish the very concept of the literature. Choi, inventing the literary tradition and searching for the lineage of literature, enlarged the boundaries of the literature and enabled the sequent generation to establish the history of the national literature.
