This thesis is to inquire into the development of Korean modem Bildungsroman, the founding of its concept, and its genre quality. The typicalization of Bildungsroman is made in the aspect of subject matter. And Hwang Sun-Won's short story, Sonagi, is taken as a text for research, and sonagi is analyzed in the aspect of Bildungsroman.
Bildungsroman is a genre of a narrative which takes various kinds of experience of main character at puberty as subject matter. Mainly, Bildungsroman unfolds its story based on the shocking experience in the course of forming self-identity. The story of growth is divided into three types. They are a type of simple experience, a type of conflict, a type of socialization. Generally speaking, they can be classified into the conflicts of self-consciousness and real world, and the course of the conflict's unifying into the established social group's values. And when Sonagi is analyzed in the viewpoint of Bildungsroman, it can be said that, this story is a type of simple experience to picture the course of awakening the sex identity of a boy and a girl by themselves.
