Diesel engine has been attractive for its high thermal efficiency. As the CO₂ reduction is strongly requested. diesel engine is considered one of the most realistic solutions in the transport system. However, clean diesel engine cannot be developed without advanced technologies to comply with the stringent emission law. Therefore, currently much of researches are focused on how to reduce the diesel engine emission in the engine itself as well as after-treatment. Although new techniques are effective to the emission reduction, their application is carefully approached. This is because the new techniques have positive and negative effects in terms of fuel and cost economy. In this paper, several techniques are presented and their characteristic behaviors are discussed for the small displacement volume passenger diesel engine. Then, emission potential is estimated with the DOE optimization for the next staged regulation such as EU5.
