The main purposes of this study are to describe the recognition and attitude of marriage and child birth, and to explore the factors impacting on the marriage and child birth of university students.
This study is based on the survey which was conducted from November 28 to December 30, 2004 among university students in Daegu area. Originally 500 questionnaires were distributed and 461 were collected. Descriptive and inferential statistics, such as frequencies, cross-tabulation analysis, logistic regression analysis and regression analysis were introduced, and in which fourteen independent variables and three dependent variables were included.
The results of this study are as follows : 91.8 percentage of the respondents have intentions to get married in the future. 41 percentage of the respondents answered that they would have preferences to have two children as their ideal number of children, while 52.3 percentage of respondents expressed that they would have preferences to have one child as their ideal number of children.
According to logistic regression analysis, economic status, parents’ income, positive thinking for the future, intention for marriage have statistically significant impacts on the ideal number of children. In the multiple regression analysis, age, parents’ income, the number of siblings, positive thinking for the future, intention of marriage have statistically significant impacts on the number of expected children. However, rest of independent variables do not have statistically significant impacts on the number of expected children.
Finally, some suggestions and policy implications to improve the issues related to the recognition and attitude of university students’ marriage and child birth are introduced and discussed.
