Le Petele Ecarlate (The Scarlet Petal) is one of the most famous Malagasy novels of the end of the twentieth-century. In this novel, Charlotte Rafenomanjato depicts the image of Malagasy women relating to family, motherhood, jobs and professions and morality. She shows woman as the Malagasy tradition portrays her: the furniture of a house, a symbol of beauty and frailty. She emphasizes the fact that women are meant to be decorative, humble and silent and even the choice of female names in the Malagasy society Illustrate this prejudice. In addition to that she stresses the fact that marriage and motherhood are the only possible honourable future and destiny of Malagasy women otherwise they would be no different from prostitutes. More than that, Rafenomanjato suggests that suffering is woman's lot, whether it be from society or from men themselves. Men on the other hand are seen as predators or saviours. Independence here is put Into question and adds to the prejudice that women need men to comfort and protect them. Rafenomanjato presents the women working in the book as debased and exploited in every possible way. In contrast to all this however lies the value of a woman as a pillar of society in that she is the guardian of morality, virtue, and family. Despite the hardships that women endure in the book, they are shown as extremely courageous and honourable: they do not accept to be defeated neither by fate nor nature and even less by social prejudices. In fact, this book closes on a very optimistic image: that of the heroine allowed at last to build a family With the one she loves, overcoming the bad spell that fell on her and overcoming social barriers by herself.
