This study investigates the influence of masculine ideology on fathers and sons in the modern American play, True West by Sam Shepard. When approaching this American traditional family drama, it is revealed how the father’s masculinity touches the emotions of the sons’ masculinity. A father figure is influential on male characters in settling their masculinity. In this play, the absence of the father can lead his sons to conflict while establishing their identities of manhood. Although this limited example cannot be viewed as reliably representative of all cases in American Drama, it is interesting to note that masculinity seems to become more problematic in the work, offering us visions of ways that masculinity is rigidly constructed and how it is problematic within American society.
