When capitalist economic system showed a tendency to falter, leading to the end of the post-war economic boom in 1970s, capitalists responded as they had in the past. There was a drive to develop new technology-oriented economy that could cut costs. As this strategy seemed so effective, many came to view the present capitalist economy as the end point of mankind's development. Not a few intellectuals, even among the left radicals, have fallen prey to this kind of view. According to Baudrillard and Lacan/Zizek, for example, "the Real is impossible." It is impossible because we cannot express it in language(Lacan/Zizek) or the present society enters into a new level totally dominated by virtuality (Baudrillard). As there are no criteria from which to judge the state of the things, it is hard to see a positive political program from them. Their proposed action is thoroughly personal and dependent upon nothing but private volition. But the crisis of capitalism we are witnessing today shows past economic boom has been the result of purely speculative gambles. The real, after many years of reticence, finally starts to say something. Raymond Williams provides us with some significant clues to decipher this saying. According to him, language plays a constitutive role in founding human consciousness and human appropriation of reality. He shows human experience based upon a community can be important "resources for hope" for future. "Partisanship," one of the most notorious words that went obsolete after the collapse of Eastern 'communist' countries, sees new light with his outspoken acknowledgement of his own rootedness.
