This study conducted a survey to examine the relationships between attitudes toward three particular “victimless” criminal offenses, the personality construct of authoritarianism, the manner in which the crimes are described in the question format of the survey, and several demographic variables. This survey did not require the respondents to make direct comparisons among the six crimes (three crimes × two types of participation). Therefore, the degree to which respondents viewed one crime as more or less “serious,” or requiring greater punishment than any other of the crimes within this survey is unclear. The purpose of the present study is to create a scale of seriousness for those six crimes. Twenty respondents rated their attitudes regarding the legal intervention of the offenses and then selected from pair wise comparisons of the crimes regarding their perceived seriousness. The results indicate that, although the two resulting scales vary slightly, people do have clearly differentiated attitudes among certain victimless crimes.
