This paper deals with how Kim Pu-sik and Samguk-sagi should be evaluated from the contemporary perspective. Furthermore, the process of how Kim Pu-sik came to write Samguk-sagi is presented in relation to his life. Kim Pu-sik is a progress intellectual who contributed to the cultural development of the mid 12th century through appropriation of Sung Chinese culture and continued to give strong influence in the direction of Korean medieval culture till the Chos?n period. Samguk-sagi written in simple and logical ancient text is not only a historical document tracing the development of the states in three kingdoms but also a literary document. Especially, Kim's contribution to the medieval historicism, one level up from the ancient history based on myths, by evaluating Korean ancient history and literature based on universal cultural values must be highly recognized. The life of Kim Pu-sik and Samguk-sagi will provide many insights that are comtemporary to Koreans today who are living in the era of globalization.
