In recent years ‘Sustainability' has often been cited in Architecture. Our environment has been severely polluted from the emission of large amounts of CO2. Architecture shares a large part of the responsibility for the environmental side effects. Many countries have been operating certification systems from the 90's to confirm sustainable properties of new buildings. Korea has operated the ‘Green Building Certification Criteria (GBCC)' since 2002. The number of buildings acquired ‘GBCC' certification has increased dramatically since 2006. Outdoor spaces in collective housing are crucial for measuring sustainability in economic, environmental and social aspects. However, the current GBCC system is not able to examine sustainability in collective housing thoroughly due to its broadly assorted certification standards. The purpose of this study is to develop detailed standards of outdoor spaces in collective housing for sustainability evaluation through analyzing and integrating spatial characteristics of existing sustainable collective housing complexes of foreign countries according to the fundamental properties of ‘sustainability’.
