Akutagawa Ryunosuke(1892~1927) is one of the most well-known Japanese author in Taisho period(1912-26) who was brilliant, sensitive, cynical, neurotic: whose fictions sparkle with esprit and wit. In a Grove is the source of the famous Japanese movie called Rashomon which won the grand prize at the 12th International Film Festival at Venice in 1951.
The study of In a Grove usually has been accomplished through the only method of content analysis or comparative literature, which concludes the message of the work. But it is more important that the form and style of the text should be taken into consideration. Because the text of In a Grove is very unique as a communicating system and not so simple on representation of fictional events. In this paper therefore, the point of view and the narrative style which reflect the structure of recognition and representation will be considered.
The term 'point of view' has been understood as the relation of narrator to fictional world. In narratology, Gerard Genette(1930~) criticized this conceptional confusion, and suggested distinguishing 'who is viewing' from 'who is speaking.' However, in his classification of point of view, he also confused 'who is viewing' with 'what is being viewed.' He only dealt with 'what is being viewed' and neglected 'who is viewing.' As an alternative method, I suggest using new two terms: 'viewpoint' (the subject of recognition) and 'focuspoint' (the object of recognition) These terms solve the problem of 'who is viewing' and 'what is being viewed' simultaneously. There are four combinations of narrator's 'cutter viewpoint' and charactor's 'inner viewpoint', 'outside focuspoint' of charactor's behavior and 'inside focus point' of consciousness.
The story of In a Grove is concerns with the case of murder in the suburbs of Kyoto in the end of Heian period(794~1192). A samurai named Kanazawa Takehiro was killed (or suicided) in the grove. The text is composed of the arrangement of the seven person's testimonies and confessions. Suprisingly either the suspect Tajomaru or the widow Masago insist that they killed the murderer is self. Also through a medium the murdered man Takehiro tell that he suicided. The narrator reveals the process of examination not by 'telling' but by 'showing' only.
The events of In a Grove can be devided in '① past perfective events' and '② present progressive events'. ① is the incidents of rape and murder tor suicide) occured in the grove: ② is the occurence of the statements before the high police commissioner. Through the analysis it emerged that ① is the combination of inner viewpoint to inside-outside focuspoint, and ② is inner-outter viewpoint to outside focuspoint. It can be found the main message of In a Grove not only in the rape and murder events but also in the discourse concerning that events. The value of In a Grove is the one that tries to overcome the centeralized and simple viewpoint which is the limitation of modern fiction.
