We are very familiar with Buddhist art, because it is an aspect of our Buddhist culture. Everywhere we see Buddhist temples, with pagodas. Indeed there are now about 1,000 pagodas in my country. Much research on pagodas has been accomplished as part of architecture, history, and art including archeology. Because this accumulated work is so extensive, organizing all these topics to consider in one essay might be too difficult.
However, looking into what research on pagodas in this country has achieved, and its current status, it is not only helpful to make full use of materials already gathered, but essential to determine the direction and the process of the research.
Although this essay may leave something to be desired, I consider that it is necessary to organize research. Because pagodas are in no way standardized, consideration of their appearance and structure can change, according to the angle of the researcher. The appearance of pagodas can be considered in several different ways, depending on the researcher's point of view, so that standardization has some risks. I conclude my essay by expressing the wish that future researchers will be more aware of this fact.
