This study is to analyze the political characteristics and significances of Choi Hanki's ki(氣) thought. Choi Hanki had political goals to protect peaceful life of the distressed ruled and to accomplish state development in the late 19th century of Chosun dynasty. In order to achieve his goals, he presented a people-centered theory of politics based upon the equalitarian view of domestic and international order, and some theoretical bases which focus on ki philosophy, such as the definition of human nature as the subject of desire for life, the recognition of individuality, and the epistemological method of the objective understanding toward nature. And his various policy alternatives were the practical reflection of his theoretical bases. This study explains that Choi Hanki's ki thought was formed by a combination of the tradition of ki philosophy of the Chosun dynasty, the rapid inflow of Western knowledge in that time, and Choi Hanki's own scholarly originality. Finally, it can be assessed that Choi Hanki's ki thought is very equality-oriented and reformative, and that it well shows the characteristics of the East Asian equalitarian tradition based on equality, individuality, harmony, and cooperation, different from the Western tradition which emphasizes individual-centered values and contention between individuals.
