This paper aims to face up squarely to the problem of terminology occurring in analyzing the internal components of complex nouns. In the framework of the traditional classification of parts of speech in Korean, we are confronted with a kind of discrepancy, which originates from inconsistency of terminologies. Here we focus on ‘adjective’, ‘root’, etc. For example, the so-called ‘root’ makes it difficult or confusing to analyze some sino-complex nouns into their components.
To overcome this problem, we replace the concept of ‘root’ and ‘adnominal’ by a new concept of ‘adjective’, and we convert the traditionally used/accepted terminology ‘adjective’ to ‘subjective verb’, ‘descriptive verb’, which are more systematic terminologies from the viewpoint of the classification of parts of speech. On the basis of this new classification, we can clarify more explicitly the internal structure of complex nouns in Korean. Moreover, we can re-establish the exact status of the lexical elements which were in the dead angle as ‘root’, and we can make clear the characteristics of the lexical elements which have been called ‘adjectives’ or ‘adnominals’.
