In conclusion, the theory of literature by Zhu xi is summarized as follows:
1. Verse expresses the righteous of the original nature. It plays not only an emotional role which controls, fosters, and annuls our human nature, but also an intellectual role which teaches and realizes the natural law and the human affairs to us. According to Zhu Xi, Prose is identical with tao. The former reveals and overflows the latter, therefore both are never different their origin and history.
2. A Verse criticism is based on the through understanding and analysis of the poems.
As verse serves to make the human beings mild and sincere, we have to purse the evidence of critics in terms of the relative quality of the writer's intention rather than the relative standing of writer's skill. A critic is venerated when he criticizes the works through his own point of view. A fine work consists of the ease description, his own findings on law of life, his own some ornamental figures and his own styles. Zhu xi established his own literary view based on moral principles as a practicing critic as well as a theorist.
3. The history of verse is divided into three periods: one is from the first writing of the poems to the end of the Han dynasty; another is from the foundation of Wei and Jib dynasties to the early Tang dynasty in which the style of verse is not idendical with its present one and the other is from then to now in which its style is identical with one another. one the other hand, The history of prose continued with the orthodox school, to say, its historical order is King Mun, Confucious, Mencious and metaphysicists. Both verse and prose change inevitably, but the thesis that the old law of literature should be well preserved came to be faint or disappeared gradually in accordance with its development.
