This paper aims to deal with the aspects of postmodern-feminism through the analysis of postmodern feminism and The French Lieutenant's Woman In the second half of the 20th century, the old phenomena in the world culture are intermingled with new. And we call this periodic change as postmodernism. This kind of change has affected the previous, traditional feminism(for example, radical feminism, liberal feminism, Marxist feminism, etc), and feminism has been changing with postmodern consciousness.
In this paper, this kind of changed feminism will be called as postmodern-feminism, and this term includes the new French feminism, eco-feminism, postfeminism, and postmodern feminism. Though postmodern feminism has many kinds of diversities, this paper focalizes on two aspects, namely, the "acceptability of 'Other'" and "the use of feminity (especially that of sexuality)".
John Fowles's The French Lieutenant's Woman(1969) is famous for a typical postmodern novel, so this paper examines this novel with a little different viewpoint. First of all, this paper chooses the second ending as a proper ending from three endings which Fowles suggests in this novel. In the second ending of chapter 60, Sarah and Charles get married and make a happy and beautiful family with their daughter who was born from their sexual love of only one time.
Sarah is typical Other, but she accepts her position as Other and uses this for herself advantageously. This is different from the previous feminism. Previous feminism didn't agree with women's Other, and they struggled, not to be Other. The meaning of the term 'Other' is 'not subject' here.
Secondly, Sarah uses her feminity, especially her sexuality to get the true love from Charles, and finally she achieves the goal. Using feminity or sexuality as a weapon was a kind of taboo in Victorian period and in previous feminism. But in postmodern feminism, feminity and sexuality are natural just as 'the Earth as Mother.' Therefore, Sarah's behavior of using sexuality is very natural, and this is the basis of life.
Postmodern-feminism has many different aspects, too, because the postmodern characteristics are diverse. So, this paper deals only with very small area of postmodern-feminism. This paper is expected to help to understand the postmodern-feminism and our changing society.
