The International Secretariat of the Institute of Pacific Relations (IRP), which was located in New York, published the book ≪Modern Korea≫ in 1944. This book has been highly evaluated in both domestic and international academic circles as one of the classic works on modern Korean history. However, to date no studies have been undertaken on the background to the publication of this book, which came out right before the end of the Pacific War. Furthermore, no in-depth analyses of the books contents have been carried out, and very little is known about the life of its author, Andrew J. Grajdanzev (1899～ ?).
After having conducted a review of Grajdanzevs life and his research activities based on the IPR Papers preserved in Columbia University, this paper proceeds to analyze the motives for the writing of this book and its contents. This paper also strives to analyze the relationship between Grajdanzev and the IPR. Grajdanzev published many studies papers and essays on the socio-economic situation in Far East countries such as Korea, Manchuria, Siberia, and Japan. When McCarthyism emerged in the United States at the beginning of the 1950s, his research activities came to an end.
This paper will review the life of an intellectual who strived to bring about peace and stability to an East Asia that was entangled in the wars and revolutions that beset the first half of the 20th century. Moreover, this paper draws attention to the activities of the progressive intellectuals working in the IPR who strived to move beyond the boundaries of the state and nation in search of a new East Asian order for the 21st century.
