Kim Koo is one of the most famous politicians in Korea's modem history, who has been a symbolic leader of Korea's nationalism since 1948. Although it was prohibited to deal with him during the Rhee government, his name has been located in the center of independence movement since 1960s in order to legitimize ROK's historical lineage compared to that of the DPRK. However, it is not easy to find an objective and valuable works on him. He has been mentioned as a part of activities in the Provisional Bovernment.
There were two significant debates on him; One is about the Anti-trusteeship movement initiated by him between 1945 and 1947, and the other is evaluation of his participation at the South-North Conference in 1948. The former was triggered by Prof. Suh Joong Suk, who argued that the movement contributed not to unification, but to the division. His argument is getting currency among scholars now. However, most of scholars did not ignore his role in the South-North Conference in 1948 and could not reject his contribution to the unification movement.
The latter was rasied by so-called "New Right Group." According to them, Kim Koo's activities were overestimated because those were not realistic as well as anti-ROK government movement. The group argued that the establishment of the ROK government was a crucial watershed for civilization history of Korea, and Kim Koo did not contribute anything for the establishment.
Now is the time to illuminate him objectively as he was. The ideology and the symbol which covered him should be erased for new research about him. And at the same time, verification of raw materials on him should be conducted by scholars, since most of authors created those materials politically. Kim Koo should be examined not as a nationalist or a leader, but as Kim Koo.
