The World Alliance of Reformed Churches, which is consisted of 75 million Christians of Reformed tradition, held its 24th General Council in August 2004 in Accra, Ghana, under the theme "That all may have life in fullness" based on John 10.10. The theme was chosen because the earth community is suffering with the threat to life. The issue of "Life" is one of the most pressing theological issues in the 21st century.
The Reformed Christians around the world read the signs of the time today as a global crisis of life. They recognized that the current threat to life is being accelerated by nee-liberal economic globalization, because of its nature of exclusion, erosion of nature, erosion of democracy and destruction of community, upside down of the values and promotion of mammonism.
In face of this urgent situation, Christian community cannot keep silence because the situation is in full contradiction with the Gospel mandate. According to John 10.10, the Christ came to the world in order to provide all people and creation fullness of life. Threat to life is a direct challenge and contradiction to the Gospel mandate for life in fullness.
In response to this urgent and pressing situation, the World Alliance of Reformed Churches adopted "Covenanting for Justice in the Economy and the Earth", as it is known as the Accra Confession. The Accra Confession was a Reformed community's "Yes" to Debrecen call for progressive recognition, education, and confession(processLLS corfessionis) regarding economic injustice and ecological destruction that was made by the 23rd General Council held in Debrecen, Hungary in 1997.
The Accra Confession says "No" to nee-liberalism which promotes mammonism as well as the empire which puts its power over the sovereignty of God. The Accra Confession has many significances. For the first time in the Christian history, it took the issue of life, which is not doctrinal issue, as a matter of confession. It took the poverty of my neighbour as my problem, not their problem. It also made clear that justice and unity cannot be separable issues. For the first time in the Christian history, the Southern perspective determined the world Christian community's confession.
The Accra Confession challenges the Korean Church, who is suffering and struggling with the terrible consequence of neoliberal economic globalization, to seriously reflect on what it means to confess the faith in today's value system which is so dominated by nee-liberal thinking.
