The theme of this article is reprobation, which is the most disputed and controversial element in the doctrine of predestination of John Calvin. The predestination of reprobation means that God predestined some of the human race to be excluded from His Salvation Works, and accordingly, some to be predestined into His Salvation. The most serious critique against reprobation concerns the subject of God's justice. Critics say that it is inconsistent with the love and justice of God. There has recently been an emergence of interest in the theory of universal salvation, and consequently, the doctrine of reprobation has been widely rejected by a growing number of people who view it as unwelcome. However, in this article I will explore the doctrine of reprobation and evaluate whether we should abandon the reprobation doctrine because it is unreasonable or if we should keep it because it is still significant today.
I hope to bring light to the fact that reprobation has biblical basis and is theologically appropriate. I have also concentrated on the relationship between reprobation and the justice of God. The fruits of my study are as following: reprobation is not contradictory to God's justice; therefore we cannot say God is unjust because of reprobation. Here I considered both infralapsarianism and supralapsarianism In the view of infralapsarianism, reprobation becomes a righteous action of God because it is towards the corrupted. In the view of supralapsarianism, reprobation is still a righteous action because it is God's decision. In the latter we should consider who the judge of justice and injustice is. Calvin asserts that the judge is God himself. That is, if it is God's will it is just, but if it is contradictory to God's will it is unjust.
Calvin says that the will of God is expressed in the Scriptures and that human reason is unable to understand the whole of the will of God as revealed in the Scriptures. Therefore human reason cannot be the ultimate basis of judgment between justice and injustice. Consequently, the subject of whether or not we should approve of the doctrine of reprobation goes back to whether we should follow the authority of the Scriptures or of human reason. And on this matter Calvin asserts his principle of theology that we should obey only the authority of the Scriptures and not of human reason. Therefore, it is right that we believe and teach the predestination of reprobation according to the Scriptures, though it is scandalous and unwelcome to human reason.
