This paper attempted to analyze the description of history found in the history textbook, 《Korean Modern and Contemporary History》. Moreover special attention was paid to the period stemming from the opening of the three ports until Japan"s annexation of Korea in 1910. This paper delved into the question of how the history of this period was described, how the minjung was characterized, and what were some of the problems with these descriptions.
The description of the history of this transitional period down the road to modernization comes across as being nationalist tainted with the focus being strongly placed on the nationalist and modernization movements. The use of such a descriptive method runs the risk of presenting a view of history that is based on the thoughts and actions of the various actors that participated in the modernization drive, especially the minjung class, which has been for the most part alienated from history, and as such may be out of synch with actual events. First of all, as the minjung"s thoughts and actions are filled with contradictions, given the fact that they lived in the real world, and mixed with traditions and customs, the minjung cannot be explained using such concepts as modernization and nationalism.
Taking a look at the descriptions found in the history textbook, we find that individuals who possessed ideologies that were deemed to be contrary to the achievement of national and modernization related objectives or who acted differently from the norm are not dealt with at all. Furthermore, the minjungs" thoughts and actions are used only in conjunction with descriptions of the nation. As a result, the individual characteristics of the minjung, their lifestyle, thoughts, and actions are completely excluded from the textbook or described as being part of the nationalist and modernization movements or as individuals who have been enlightened by the elite class despite their inherent limitations.
This method of lumping the minjung within the codes of nation and modernity results in an understanding of history that limits the minjung"s thoughts and actions to the nationalist movement. Such an approach also precludes the possibility of creating a new method of understanding the historical formation of modernization. At this point, it is important to restore the minjung"s history, which had its own individual characteristics quite separate from the codes of nation and modernity, so as to bring about a more diversified understanding of history and to provide more factors with which to reconsider modern and contemporary history.
