The original motivation to write this paper was some simple curiosities on the frequent occurrences of mystical grammatical forms such as sye(셰) and mat?y(마듸), which functioned like bound nouns or so-called the postmodifiers in the regional materials of late 19th century South-western dialects. In now-a-days dialect survey field works on this South-western regions, we can't find out any native speakers, who make use of those grammatical forms or at least some reflexes in natural every-day vernaculars. In the time of late 19th century of South-western dialects, one of above mentioned bound nouns sye(셰) appeared typically after fixed modifier with meaning of "has no choice but to do" or "can not help doing". So, what happened in the statues of those grammatical forms during the advent of Modem Korean at the turns of 20th century?
In the course of investigating those grammatical forms, inadvertently I have come across the much controversial realms of bound noun system in Recent Korean as well as that of Modem Korean. But, at any costs, I have really no intention to participate belatedly in the group of researchers who have had much arguments and armed with strong theories in order to defend their own constructed system of bound nouns in Recent or Modem Korean.
In the first part of my paper, I simply suggested that the assumed mystical grammatical form of sye(셰) have occurred as early as at 16th century Korean in the colloquial style of every day life, especially in the hangeul letter writings. With the help of newly developed grammaticalization theoy(Hopper & Traugott 2003), I argued that the loan word from Chinese '勢'(force), which functioned free noun at first happened to occur repeatedly in the fixed conventionalized syntactic construction such as "-(으)ㄹ+셰+있-/없-". In the course of time with semantic change via metaphorization the free noun '勢'(force) in this exclusive syntactic structure was transformed gradually into grammatical form, which has grammaticalized into bound noun. I maintained convincingly with much contemporary linguistic materials that the other case of grammatical form mat?y(마듸), which appeared as early as in Middle Korean already with much abstracted meaning in the exclusive syntactic environments underwent the same path of grammaticalization.
In the second part of my paper, I have surveyed the dynamic relationship of the grammatical functions between another newly emergent grammatical form such as '슈' (手/數) with old traditional sye(셰) in terms of over-all frame of bound noun system. With much contemporary dialect materials I suggested a strong tendency in the direction of change 셰→슈.
