It has become clear that the concluding inflection of a negative form of auxiliary verb had the shift to NU from ZU around the beginning of the second half medieval Japanese. In this paper, the negative sentences in "Cheophaesineo" are analyzed. The analysis in terms of the common usage and the background of the changing process of the negative sentences will show that the auxiliary verb ZU gave way to the limited usage of [masukei]. The following is the result of the analysis.
(1) Although the original manuscript shows the negative expression, "ZU／N／NU／NE／NA／MAI／NDE／NAI／NAU／INDE", the version printed later shows the expression like "NE" as its negative equivalents of the original manuscript.
(2) The negative expression was changed from Zu to "NE, IDE, NU, NAI, N." The expressioins of "N, ZU, NAI, MAI" were changed into NU.
(3) Morphologically, NU accompanies more particle than ZU. Semantically Nu seems to play role of "big break" which means making bigger paragraph than ZU.
(4) At first ZU had the function of both [masukei] and "big break," but the function of "big break" is thought to have declined, and been substituted by "NU". "ZU" therefore, has the limited usage of MASUKEI.
