The striking feature of six points of October 1327 is their similarity to the chief points of the abortive treaty made between King Robert and Andrew Harcla in 1323. According to the terms of the Harcla treaty, two kingdoms were to be separate and independent. If Edward II and the Dispensers had accepted peace on Bruce's terms in 1323 the English would have fared better than they did five years later.
The terms of the final treaty show clearly that it was based on Bruce's six points of October 1327. The heart of the matter was the English renunciation of sovereignty and the marriage alliance. Six points are as follows. (1) King Edward renounced of all claims to lordship, or sovereignty over Scotland. (2) A marriage was contracted between David Bruce and Joan of the Tower. King Robert promised to make available to Joan before the following Ascension Day(12 May) a dower of landed estates worth 2,000 pound a year, guaranteed for the term of her life. (3) No part of the final treaty dealt with the vexed question of the ‘Disinherited’. (4) There was to be a military alliance between England and Scotland, saving the Franco-Scottish alliance of 1326. (5) King Robert bound himself to pay to King Edward 20,000 pound for the sake of peace. The money was to be paid at Tweedmouth in three annual instalments. (6) The English king and his council would do all they could to have the papal sentences of excommunication against Bruce and his subjects lifted
The war aims of Robert I were the recovery of Scottish territory and a peace recognizing him as rightful king of an independent Scotland. Thus, within a year of his own death, Robert Bruce at last achieved the object for which he had fought so long: peace between Scotland and England on the basis of mutual independence. The Treaty of Edinburgh of 17 March 1328, was formally ratified on the English side at the parliament of Northampton on 4 May 1328. It was a remarkably fair settlement.
