Fruit malformation is a commercial strawberry production problem. To investigate the cause of this phenomenon, the nutrient status of normal, semi-deformed and fully-deformed fruits of ‘Selva’ cultivar fruits was determined. The content of Ca, Zn and Mg in misshaped fruits was below the level of normal strawberry fruit suggesting that a deficiency of these elements could induce malformation. This phenomenon also affected the quality parameters. Misshapen fruit had less health and food value; a 19%-28% reduction in vitamin C and 40% less total anthocyanin content. Maintaining proper mineral elements composition of plants and fruit may therefore prevent fruit malformation and produce a more nutritious product.
