The aim of this study is to analyse the meaning of Heart and Mind(마음, 心) which is appeared in both Manhae and Liang Ch'ich'ao(梁啓超)'s thoughts and then consider the characteristics of East-Asia ideology in the early formation period of modern ages based on the results of analysation mentioned above.
Manhae and Liang Ch'ich'ao is contemporaneous with each other. And they are representatives of modern thoughts and literature in Asia. Especially, Manhae accepts Liang Ch'ich'aos's thoughts. This fact makes it possible that we can consider the corelation between both. But you must not understand that it would be one-sided or upper and lower sided relations. Because Manhae accepts it and also trans-uses it creatively from the point of view of postcolonialism. This paper makes this standpoint clear by analysing Heart and Mind appeard in thoughts of two.
Liang Ch'ich'ao appropriates the tradition of practical ethics in teachings of Wang Yang-ming. He emphasizes the mental power and through it he establishes the scheme of ethics correctly in China. When it comes to saying this, the concept of self-awakeness(自得) is what he emphasizes. Manhae also stipulate the meaning of heart and mind in the tradition of Buddism. Heart and Mind is individual and universal at the same time. That is. Heart and Mind means the realisation of universal Buddahood. Through this, he forms the scheme of modern ethics in Chosun. Here, emerging concept is self-awakeness(自心) in Buddahood (similar to that of Liang Ch'ich'ao).
There are some difference and commons between Liang Ch'ich'ao and Manhae. Looking commons; First, Heart and Mind has the meaning of individuality and univerality too. Second, their thoughts begin with conventional Confucianism and Buddism but end with modernized appropriation. Third, Heart and Mind is recognized as centricity of modern scheme of ethics.
Differences are; the meaning of Heart and Mind in thought of Liang Ch'ich'ao comes down to the concept of nationalismic nation whereas that of Manhae moves foward to Buddism oriented cosmopolitanism beyond nationalism.
Heart and Mind in East-Asian modern ideology has peculiar meaning. It is in with a process of coupling and using together of West and the rest of it or tradition and modernity by East-Asian men of thoughts.
