I first point out two major trends of Keats studies: one focusing on the eternity of his imagination, and the other discovering the materialism of his poetry. After balancing the merits and demerits of such extant studies, this paper aims at clarifying the dialectic working in Keats’s poetic imagination. Chapter II analyzes the two opposite forces of eternity and sensuous temporality which compose respectively the thesis and antithesis, starting a dialectical process in Keats’s poetry. Chapter III shows how those opposites are led to a synthesis by sublating each other. The synthesis may be justly termed “eternal sensuousness” or “sensuous eternity.” And finally, in Chapter IV, Keats’s dialectic imagination is evaluated not only as a critique of the Romantic ideology of transcendental imagination but also, more positively, as a “standard law” of life on earth. Thus Keats both accepts the temporal conditions of the earthly life and dreams of a life better suited to our human desire.
