V. Nabokov has never been free from the Russian literary tradition. He showed a respect and support to Pushkin's artistic achievements by translating Eugene Onegin and annotating on that with his own literary view. His last Russian novel The Gift is a dedication to the 19th and 20th century Russian writers who raised Nabokov's literary capacity. In many cas es the Russian literature and writers are presented as one of main characters in his novels.
Nabokov was interested in writers' biography, but he didnt have any interest in the real biographical facts. Rather he tried to understand the facts in different ways from a traditional view. As a result in his novels the real characters experience a transformation to imaginative ones. Nikolai Gogol is one of them.
In this book Gogol is presented different from Gogol in other critics' commentary. Nabokov collects and presents various materials about Gogol's life (letters, reminiscences of his contemporaries etc.), but the readers read and understand Gogol and his art just through the materials selected by Nabokov. In other words Nabokov ignores existing evaluations on Gogol's literary world, but gives his own explanations on Gogol's biographical facts and his literary world. According to Nabokov's view Gogol was not interest ed in religious salvation of soul or moral education on mankind. Rather in Gogol's works Nabokov seeks artistic amus ements. It is not a purpose of this article to examine that this view is a right attitude to understand Gogol's art or not. It is more important to understand that Nikolai Gogol is a Nabokov's imaginative work rather than a biography on Gogol.
