European energy security is facing a set of serious challenges connected to EU's dependence on Russian energy and the need for diversifying energy supply sources. This article provides an in-depth analysis of EU's energy dependence on Russian energy. EU's energy dependence on Russia is an outcome of a long-standing energy relationship between Europe and Russia, not merely reduceable to Russia's imperialist energy policy.
The focus of the article is on the deepening of EU's dependence on Russian gas since the 2000s. The article further examines policies and strategies EU implemented to reduce its dependence on Russian gas supply.
This paper argues that in order to tackle European energy dependence on Russia, a more formal framework should be established to streamline EU energy policies and to integrate Russia into the European energy system. European states must realize that working together on issues of energy security, especially when dealing with Russia, will be mutually beneficial in the long term.
