Japan invaded Chosun in April 1592. Seoul was overwhelmed and the King of Chosun took flight in 15 days after the outbreak of war. As the odds of war had been against Chosun, Chosun asked Ming(明) for relief army. The first relief army of Ming failed in recapturing Pyeongyang(平壤) but the second relief army succeeded it in January 1593. The allied forces of Chosun and Ming followed up a victory and advanced to recapture Seoul. As Japanese forces had run short of provisions, there was no choice to fight them. 'They fought a decisive battle around Byeokjegwan, Goyang(高陽), Gyeonggi Province(京畿道). This is Byeokjegwan battle occurred on January 27, 1593.
As Ming forces were off their guard after a victory in Pyeongyang battle, Japanese forces won a great victory in Byeokjegwan battle. The main forces of Japan were Kobayakawa Takakage(小早川隆景)'s force and Tachibana Munesige(立花宗茂)'s force. Because this battle was one of the three great Japanese triumphs, the valuation on person who took a leading part in this battle was regarded as a important matter. Kobayakawa was set a higher value than Tachibana.
The Byeokjegwan battlefield was exploited as a historic site to make a display of Japanese triumphs. The monument of a war was elected in 1933 and the memorial park was made in 1937. This battlefield was the best propaganda material to justify Japanese rule of Chosun colony and invasion on the Northeast Continent.
