It is probably fair to say that one powerfully developing trend across a wide range of social and human sciences is to question the older notion of "tradition" as unquestionably central to certain contexts, and take a more critical and scientific approach not only to the process underlying what are called "traditional" but also to the whole notion of "tradition" and how to study it. The purpose of this article is to provide a powerful methodological framework for investigating and describing how Hausa oral praise poetry "tradition" as against written poetry "tradition" is being redefined and recreated in Northern part of Nigeria in "modern" contexts. To achieve this goal, this article focuses on arguing the importance of the study of the following two aspects: 1) aspects of stylistic change observed in Hausa oral poetry tradition; 2) new trends and tendencies of Hausa oral poetry tradition as viewed from the context of the modem socio-political environments.
