J. M. Coetzee's fourth novel 'The life and times of Michael K' is well known for its ambiguous and allusive character. The political and social background considered, when the novel was published in eighties in South Africa, many readers including some famous critics like N. Gordimer(1984), found the book, presumably also the author, very disappointing. Consequently the work was fiercely criticised as a novel of little contribution to the struggle against Apartheid and its main character Michael K as well. In this paper, however, we have tried to search the spirit and meaning of resistance, which is the basic motivation of the main character in his ventures in and around the camps. Much more important are his action and intention that all the procedures be performed in peaceful way without causing any counter force.
Michael K's attitudes and actions can be understood as an intention toward a submersion into eternity, which term was once proposed by F. Nietsche during the discussion on the topic of building block of Western civilization. Later this theme was once more uttered by the French philosopher Deleuze & Guattari(l977). For the method of doing submersion and also of minimalism in life, it was recommended to meditate or keep reverie, which once the Rousseau described well in his well known essay(l979).
So we claim that we are well able to understand the aspect of world of the main character Michael K with the help of the above mentioned concepts of Submersion of Eternity and Minimalism. We cited many relevant text concerning the more specific motivations or themes that provide the evidence for our contention.
