Despite, enormous theoretical and empirical studies on this area, there is very scanty empirical evidence on the determinants of households' choice of coping mechanisms in HIV/AIDS ravaged areas. In this paper we explore determinants of household's choices of coping mechanisms in HIV/AIDS hit areas in Tanzania. Using data from three villages in the southern highlands, we investigate factors related to use of certain coping mechanisms using a multinomial logit model. This approach permits the identification of characteristics of individuals choosing multiple coping mechanisms. It estimates the probability of individual choosing a coping mechanisms or activity given a set of explanatory variable. The results from the multinomial logit model estimation indicate that the choices of coping mechanisms are strongly determined by individual and household characteristics. We argue that designing and implementing appropriate policy interventions should be targeted taking into account individual and household characteristics to avoid the entrenchment of poverty.
