Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the cognition, utilization, and needs on welfare services and leisure activities in the community dwelling elderly women.
Methods: This study employed the secondary data analysis from the large data set in the 2nd stage Brain Korea 21 project. The design of the study was a descriptive study using a face-to-face interview method. Those who were over age 65 women and living in the community were included for the study. The data were collected from the 27th of July in 2007 to 21st of September in 2007, and each subject was interviewed using the questionnaires including demographic information and cognition, utilization, and needs on welfare services, and leisure activities. The data collected were analyzed through frequencies, percentages using SPSS WIN 14.0 program.
Results: A total number of subjects were 418 over 65 years old in K city, Korea. The mean age of the sample was 74.5. First, the overall degree of recognition on the welfare services in this sample of the elderly was variant ranging from 10.3~51.2%. However, their experiences of using those services was very low: only 1.7~52.2% of the subjects ever had used those welfare services. Second, the subjects reported their financial difficulties(45.2%) and health issues(40.2%) as the most significant matter among difficulties facing them. Third, they reported that the most important services for the elderly would be the financial assistance for the low-income elderly(40.0%). Fourth, reading books and watching TV or Video was shown to be the most preferred for elderly to spend their leisure time. Lastly, the number of the elderly with inexperience of volunteer activity was 385(92.1%), revealing that volunteering activities by the elderly have not been widely promoted.
Conclusion: It was shown that the women elderly had the different characteristics on recognition, utilization, and needs of welfare service compared with the general elderly group including both men and women. Thus, the tailored welfare services that reflect the needs of recipients are needed to promote the quality of life in the community dwelling elderly women.
