In this paper we have discussed the extraposition phenomenon in English, focusing on discussing the positions of the hosts, the position of attachment of the extraposed element, LF-locality between head and complement, the constraints of extraposition and some analytic approaches to extraposition. The conclusion of this paper is as follows: The positions of the hosts modified by the extraposed elements are the subject position, the object position of transitive verbs, the object position of preposition, and the wh-phrase position in [Spec, CP]. The extraposed phrase is adjoined to the first maximal projection that dominates the phrase in which it originates. The predictions of the LF-locality theory of extraposition cannot be clearly borne out. The constraints of extraposition such as the Right Roof Constraint, the original Subjacency Condition, the revised Subjacency Condition based on the barrier theory and the Generalized Subjacency Condition have some problems. The mixed analysis seems to be the most desirable of the approaches such as the rightward movement analysis, the base-generation analysis, the stranding analysis, the variant of the stranding analysis, and the mixed analysis.
