North-East Asia that forms 1/5 of world's GDP and 1/8 of world trade now plays an important role in the world economy together with NAFTA and EU. This region is expected to continuously lead the world economy considering this region's population that is 4 times as many as EU's and rapid economic growth forecast. Korea can function as the regional economic hub because it is geographically located in the center of the region. Korea's new administration announced a project to construct the financial center to implement the plan for the regional economic hub.
This paper studies on feasibility of the project for the financial center based on economic, financial, political, social and infrastructure conditions compared with those of potential competitors in the region. Conditions are measured by objective data collected from various sources. Purpose for opening the regional financial center is justified for Korea's long term economic development. Based on the economic conditions, however, Korea is behind to not only China in all aspects but others in most aspects, Based on the financial conditions, Korea is inferior to all competitors except China. In the political, social and infrastructure conditions, Korea is less competitive than others excluding China In a nutshell, Korea would be difficult to become the regional financial center unless it improves its system through proper manpower training and abolishment of many economic hurdles such as inflexible labor system and financial supervisory system. In addition, political tension caused by North Korea should be loosened.
